Group races are divided into 4 categories;
Group 1 - at least $250,000 prizemoney - 60+ races per season
Group 2 - at least $125,000 prizemoney - 80+ races per season
Group 3 - at least $75,000 prizemoney - 110+ races per season
Listed - at least $50,000 prizemoney - 280+ races per season

The Australian horse racing season runs from August to July each year and we have listed all the Group 1 and Group 2 races on the racing calendar.

The Pago Pago Stakes is a Group 2 race for two-year-old colts & geldings held annually in late March at Rosehill racecourse in Sydney, New South Wales. The race is run over a distance of 1200 metres under set weight conditions.

The race has been named the 'Darley Stakes' in recent years and the winner of this race is exempt from ballot for the Golden Slipper Stakes.

Two-year-old colts & geldings planning to run in the Golden Slipper may use this race as their final tune up run. The Golden Slipper Stakes is the richest and most prestigious race for two-year-olds in the world, and the winners and placegetters in the Pago Pago Stakes usually are a good pick for the coveted $3.5 million Golden Slipper held the following week. The Pago Pago Stakes is the runners' last chance to qualify for the Slipper.

The last horse to win the Pago Pago Stakes and the Golden Slipper in the same season was Stratum in 2005.
